There is a specific moment on every job this tool exists for. The nail is bent, or headless, or snapped off flush, and the claw of your hammer has nothing left to grab. You need jaws that can bite the shank itself and roll it back out of the wood. That is the entire job of an end cutting nipper, and Channellock has been making this one in Meadville, Pennsylvania long enough that a lot of tradesmen have simply never owned a different pair.

It is also one of the least glamorous tools we have ever reviewed. Nobody photographs their nippers. But 1,333 owners rate it 4.6 out of 5, and when we went looking for the complaints — which is the part of this job we take most seriously — we found something more useful than a list of gripes. Most of the anger aimed at this tool is aimed at a job it was never built to do.

Which one is this, exactly?

Channellock’s own catalog calls this the 357 7-inch XLT™ End Cutting Pliers. Almost nobody else does.

Shop for it and you will find the same tool listed as a 7-1/2 inch, a 7.25 inch, and a “cross cutting plier with end cutter.” None of those are the manufacturer’s name for it. The confusion is arithmetic, not deception: Channellock sizes the tool nominally at 7 inches, while the spec sheet puts actual overall length at 7.35 inches, and retailers round in whichever direction they please.

Ignore all of it and match on the number. 357 is the 7-inch. The 356 is the 6-inch and the 358 is the 8-inch — same design, same steel, different bite. There is also an E357, which is a longer Code Blue variant and a different tool. If a listing does not show you a model number, close the tab.

Made in USA Verification

  • The manufacturer’s own words: “CHANNELLOCK® End Cutting Pliers are made in USA and forged from high carbon U.S. steel that is specially coated for ultimate rust prevention.” The product page carries a flat “100% MADE IN USA” bullet. Checked July 17, 2026.
  • The category statement: “All CHANNELLOCK® snips, non-locking pliers, professional drivers, pry bars, and ratcheting wrenches are 100% Made in the USA. A select number of CHANNELLOCK® products are imported from other countries as needed.” An end cutting nipper is a non-locking plier. It sits inside the 100% claim, not the exception.
  • The steel, not just the assembly: the maker specifies “high carbon U.S. steel” — a claim about where the material comes from, which is the claim most companies avoid making.
  • The factory: Meadville, Pennsylvania. Family-owned and family-run since 1886 — 140 years this year. We have not toured the plant. This is verified from company sources, not a site visit.
  • Independent agreement: the country-of-origin field on the tool’s largest retail listing reads US.

One thing worth clearing up, because it surfaces in the owner reviews: a few buyers over the years have questioned whether these are really American, citing listing text they remember seeing that said otherwise. We went looking and could not reproduce it. The manufacturer’s current page says 100% Made in USA in plain language, and the retail country-of-origin field agrees.

What earns Channellock the badge here is not the claim itself — anyone can print a flag on a package. It is that they publish the exception. They tell you, on their own warranty page, that some of their products are imported. A company willing to name what it does not make here is a company you can believe about what it does.

How it actually works

Two things separate this from a hardware-store nipper, and one of them explains every argument people have about it.

The first is XLT, Channellock’s leverage geometry. The rivet sits closer to the cutting edge than on a conventional high-leverage design, which shortens the distance the force has to travel and lets you cut with noticeably less grip strength. It is not marketing. Put this next to an older pair and the difference in your hand is obvious.

The second is the knife-and-anvil edge, and this is the thirty seconds that will save you a bad review. The two jaws are not matched blades meeting like scissors. One side is a knife. The other is a flat anvil. The knife drives the material against the flat and shears it. That geometry is why the edge survives being mashed into hardened nails year after year — a pair of matched blades would chip. It is also, unavoidably, why the tool cannot cut flush. The bevel sits proud of the work, so it leaves a small stub. That is physics, not a flaw, and it is the source of nearly every angry review this tool has.

What owners actually say

Let us be straight about the balance here: the criticism is thin. Of 1,333 ratings, 82% are five stars and only 3% are one star — 53 critical reviews in total. We are not going to manufacture a controversy to look even-handed. One honest caveat on the number itself: the rating pools the 7-inch and the 8-inch, which share a listing, so some of what you read is about the bigger tool.

“It doesn’t cut flush.” This is the complaint, and it recurs. One owner: “The cutting edge is beveled and in the center of the pliers so it doesn’t cut flush to your subject, but in fact leaves about a 1/4″ stub left.” Another titled his review simply “Not a flush nip design.” Both are describing the tool accurately. Neither should have bought it. You will see listings advertise the knife-and-anvil edge as producing “clean flush cuts” — it does not, and if you need a nail cut flush to a baseboard, you need flush cutters, not these. Quirk of the category, not a defect. Do not return it; return the listing copy that sold it to you.

The grips can arrive loose. The most useful negative review we found came from an owner replacing a pair he had run for over fifteen years: in all that time the grips never budged, and on the new set “both rubber grips nearly slid off the cutters.” He expects to glue them on. That is worth taking seriously — one report is not a trend, but it is the only complaint we saw that points at the tool rather than at the buyer’s expectations. If the grips slide on a new pair, that is a defect. Warranty it. Do not glue it.

Sharpness is the one genuinely mixed note. Owners split on it: plenty call the edges very sharp, a real minority report them dull on arrival. Here is the part that matters, and it is buried in the fine print — Channellock’s warranty explicitly excludes “worn or abused cutting edges.” So if yours shows up dull, claim it immediately. Work with it for a season first and a dull edge becomes indistinguishable from a worn one, and you have argued yourself out of coverage.

The head is small and the jaws are narrow. A steady drip of owners say so. They are right, and it is a 7-inch tool — that is what 7 inches buys you. If you want a wider bite, the 358 exists. Buying the small one and wishing it were the big one is not a product problem.

There is a real capacity ceiling. One owner put it better than we could: effortless up to about a quarter inch, and past that “I had to squeeze really really really hard, or take multiple bites, which made it pointless.” That is honest and it matches the spec sheet. This is a nail and wire tool. It is not a bolt cutter.

Pros & Cons

Pros: Forged in Pennsylvania from American steel, with a manufacturer willing to state both facts plainly. The XLT geometry measurably reduces the grip strength needed. The knife-and-anvil edge shrugs off hardened nails that would chip a matched-blade cutter. Owners routinely report fifteen years and more of daily service. Backed by a named limited lifetime warranty you can walk into a retailer with.

Cons: It cannot cut flush, and listings that imply otherwise set buyers up to be disappointed. The 7-inch head is genuinely small for heavy work. Edge sharpness out of the box is not perfectly consistent, and the warranty’s wear exclusion means you have to catch that early. Past roughly a quarter inch of material, the leverage advantage runs out.

Should You Buy It?

Yes — with one caveat.

Buy it if you pull nails, tie wire, or scrape carpet staples for a living or a weekend: carpenters, remodelers, electricians, rebar tiers, anyone stripping old trim out of an old house. This is the tool that gets the bent nail after the hammer has failed, and it is very good at it. Do not buy it if you need a flush cut — the knife-and-anvil edge leaves a stub by design, and squeezing harder will not change the geometry. Buy true flush cutters for that. The caveat is the day it arrives: check that the grips are seated tight and the edges meet cleanly. Owners who have carried one for fifteen years report the grips never moving, so a new pair that slides is a defect and it is covered. A dull edge is covered too — but only if you claim it now, because worn edges are not.
