Everyday carry is a new phrase for an old habit: the handful of objects you put in your pockets each morning without thinking about it. A tool, a light, a blade, a flame. Four small categories — and in each one there is still an American factory turning out the version people keep for twenty years and then replace with the same thing.
Two of the four picks below come from the same small town. W.R. Case & Sons has been making pocket knives in Bradford, Pennsylvania since 1889, and Zippo has been making lighters there since 1932. The other two come from Portland, Oregon and Ontario, California. All four companies still own their factories, and all four will repair what they sold you.

Every score below is the score from that review, and every manufacturing badge comes from the manufacturer’s own words about its own product — not from reputation, and not from our assumptions. Leatherman Wave Plus — if you carry one thing, carry this. The Wave is the tool that turned Leatherman from a clever idea into a household object, and it is the item on this page that replaces the most other items. Pliers, wire cutters, two knife blades, a saw, a file, scissors and a bit driver, folded into something that rides in a pocket. Tim Leatherman spent three years designing it after a European road trip in a Fiat that kept breaking down, armed only with a scout knife and, in his own words, wishing he had a pair of pliers. The company still builds it in Portland, Oregon and still backs it for twenty-five years.
Honesty first: it does not carry the highest score in this guide. The Zippo does, by a tenth of a point, and the Zippo is also the only item here with an unqualified Made in USA badge. We still put the Wave Plus first, because it is the one that earns its pocket space every day rather than every few weeks. If your priority is a clean origin claim above all else, buy the Zippo and read that section first.

Zippo Classic Brushed Chrome (item 200) — the highest score here, and the only unqualified American badge
Who it is for: anyone who wants a flame that works in wind, and anyone who wants a piece of American manufacturing with no qualifier attached to the origin claim. Of the four items on this page, this is the only one whose maker says Made in USA with nothing appended.
The reason to buy the brushed chrome rather than one of the thousand-odd decorated versions is that the guarantee tells you where the value is. Zippo will repair the mechanism free, forever, with no receipt and no warranty card — break the hinge, wear the cam, snap the spring, send it to Bradford and it comes back working. What the guarantee explicitly does not cover is the finish. So buy the finish that does not need covering. The brushed face hides handling marks; the high-polish version, item 250, is the identical lighter and shows every fingerprint and hairline scratch.
What owners report: 4.5 stars across 16,501 ratings — the deepest owner pool on this page by a wide margin, which makes the absence of structural-failure complaints meaningful rather than lucky. The distribution has an odd shape, though: seventy-seven percent five-star, but six percent at one star. Reading the critical reviews explains it, and it is not a defect. The lighter ships empty. Buyers open the box, flick the wheel, get a spark and nothing else. Zippo says so on its own site and on the packaging, but it still lands as a surprise often enough to dominate the low reviews. Budget for fuel, flints and a wick in the same order and the complaint disappears entirely.

Case Yellow Synthetic CS Trapper (00161) — the traditional knife, with a real caveat
Who it is for: someone who wants a slipjoint rather than a tactical folder, sharpens their own knives, and likes the idea of carrying the same pattern their grandfather did. The Trapper is a jack knife with two full-length blades on the same end — a slender clip point for detail work and a long spey for general cutting — and Case has been building it in Bradford, Pennsylvania since 1889, longer than the pattern has carried that name. The carbon steel version takes a keener edge than stainless and will develop a grey patina, which most Case owners consider the point rather than a problem.
What owners report — and why this scores 4.1 despite a 4.7 owner average: across 1,241 ratings the average is high, but the distribution is eighty-four percent five-star with a stubborn seven percent sitting at two stars or below. On comparable knives we have reviewed, the bottom of that distribution is essentially empty. Case has a genuine quality-control problem on arrival, and owners are unusually specific about it: dull tips, scratches on the metal, blade grind that wanders, edges that need work straight out of the box. The word that keeps coming up is inspection. One owner’s advice — buy Case knives in person — is the honest summary. If you order online, plan on checking it carefully and putting an edge on it yourself. The knife underneath is worth that; the finishing is a coin flip.

Mini Maglite Pro LED, 2-Cell AA — the light, with one failure worth knowing about
Who it is for: anyone who wants a serviceable pocket light that runs on batteries you can buy anywhere and outlives the batteries by decades. There is a shape Americans recognize without being told what it is — a knurled aluminum tube about the length of a hand, a head that twists to focus, a tailcap that stands it on end. It has lived in glove compartments and on duty belts since the middle of the Reagan administration, and Mag Instrument still machines it in Ontario, California.
What owners report: 10,405 ratings, eighty-one percent of them five-star — and then a small, stubborn four percent at one star. That is not the profile of a mediocre product. It is the profile of a very good product with one specific failure that ruins it entirely when it happens, and it is worth knowing before you buy. The complaint is intermittent contact. A recurring set of owners describe the light flickering, dimming or shutting off in the hand — not fading, but cutting out at random mid-use. One owner traced it across five months and dozens of battery changes and suspected the tailcap spring; others describe the same thing more briefly as a shaky connection. What owners report: 4.8 stars across 6,052 ratings, and the praise is the boring kind — people describe carrying one for a decade and then buying the same tool again. The criticism is unusually concentrated, and it is worth reading before you order. Nearly every negative review is about the missing sheath. Not most of them — nearly all. The critical review titles run: “Does not come with case.” “No pouch!” “Tool Only.” One long-time customer titled his “Wave Minus.” Leatherman removed a component buyers had received for decades; several of these owners had bought previous Waves and reasonably assumed nothing had changed. The tool is not defective — the expectation was. Order a sheath at the same time and this complaint never touches you.

What the Badges Mean on Carry Gear
Three of the four items here carry Made in USA with globally sourced components rather than a clean badge, and readers reasonably ask whether that is a dodge. It is not. It is the manufacturers’ own language about their own products, and in each case they were more specific than they had to be.
Maglite is the bluntest of the three. The company describes itself as designing and engineering in America and assembling in its American factory, where the body parts and most other parts are made — while saying plainly that some parts, components and accessories may be sourced from an overseas supplier. Case is equally direct: its own product page for this knife ends with the sentence “Made in Bradford, PA, USA from domestic and imported materials.” The knife is manufactured in Pennsylvania, unhedged; the company simply tells you some of the material is imported and does not itemize which. Leatherman’s position is the same in shape — the tool is built in Portland, some of what goes into it is not domestic.
The Zippo is the exception, and that is the practical reason to know the difference. If an unqualified Made in USA claim is your hard requirement rather than a preference, it is the only item on this page that meets it. A manufacturer that qualifies its badge is being more honest than one that stamps an unqualified claim on a comparable product, and the Federal Trade Commission’s standard is strict enough that the qualified wording is frequently the legally correct one.
How to Choose
- Carrying one thing? The Wave Plus. It does the work of the other three put together, minus the flame.
- Need an unqualified Made in USA badge? Only the Zippo qualifies.
- Want something with nothing to wear out? The Case knife or the Zippo. Both are mechanical, both are repairable, neither has electronics or a coating.
- Buying online and fussy about finish? Think twice about the Case. Its arrival quality is genuinely inconsistent and it is the one item here we would rather you bought in person.
- Buying a gift? The Zippo. It arrives looking like an heirloom and the free lifetime repair is a story worth telling — just include fuel, because it ships empty.
- Want it to work the moment you open the box? The Maglite or the Leatherman. The Zippo needs fuel and the Case usually needs sharpening.

Is any of this gear completely made in the USA?
The Zippo, by its maker’s own unqualified badge. The other three are manufactured in American plants — Portland, Bradford and Ontario, California — by companies that say openly that some parts or materials come from a global supply chain. The manufacturing jobs are American in all four cases; the raw inputs are not always.
Does the Leatherman Wave Plus come with a sheath?
No, and this is the single most common complaint about it. Leatherman removed the sheath that buyers had received for decades. The tool is unaffected; the surprise is the problem. Order a sheath alongside it.
Does the Zippo come with fuel?
No. It ships empty, by design and for shipping reasons. Zippo says so on its packaging and its website, but it still accounts for most of the lighter’s low reviews. Buy fuel, flints and a spare wick in the same order.
Why does the Case knife score 4.1 when owners rate it 4.7?
Because of the shape of the distribution rather than its average. Seven percent of owners rate it two stars or below, which is far heavier than comparable American knives we have reviewed, and the complaints are consistently about fit and finish on arrival — dull tips, scratches, uneven grinds. Our score reflects the risk that yours is one of those.
My Mini Maglite flickers or cuts out. Is it broken?
It is a known and recurring failure — intermittent contact, often attributed by owners to the tailcap spring. Around four percent of owners report it. It is covered by Mag Instrument’s service, and it is the main reason this light scores 4.0 rather than higher.
Are Case and Zippo the same company?
They are separate brands with separate factories and separate product lines, both based in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and they share a museum and flagship store in that town.
